Abstract

2 (v) Modified drying or semi-drying oil-styrene copolymers, suitable for use in the manufacture of paints and varnishes and in the production of films, are obtained by first reacting an oilsoluble alkyl or aryl substituted phenol formaldehyde condensation product with a drying or semi-drying oil and then heating the product with styrene and/or a nuclear alkyl substituted styrene in the presence of a monocyclic a -terpene. If desired, part only of the styrene, substituted styrene and/or monocyclic a -terpene may be present at the beginning of the interpolymerization, the remainders being added during the reaction. An additional solvent may be present. An excess of styrene which is removed at the conclusion of the re action may be employed as the solvent. The interpolymerization may be carried out under superatmospheric pressure at temperatures up to 250 DEG C. In the examples, conjugated linseed and isomerized oiticica oils are used to modify condensation products of p-tert.-butyl phenol and formaldehyde and the products dissolved in white spirit and dipentene are heated with styrene. A paint was produced from the copolymer varnish by admixture with titanium oxide, antimony oxide and cobalt naphthenate.
