Abstract

A synthetic resin-rubber mixture is prepared by subjecting to polymerizing conditions a latex of one of a styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer synthetic resin and a butadiene-styrene copolymer synthetic rubber which latex contains a mixture of monomers to form the other copolymer, coagulating and separating the thus formed mixture of synthetic resin and synthetic rubber from the aqueous medium. When polymerizing a mixture of styrene and acrylonitrile in a butadiene-styrene synthetic rubber latex, the synthetic rubber particles preferably contain 30 to 90 per cent by weight butadiene, the styrene content of the styreneacrylonitrile mixture is preferably 50 to 95 per cent by weight and the mixture of styrene and acrylonitrile is preferably 25 to 95 per cent by weight of the combined weight of the styrene, acrylonitrile and synthetic rubber. When polymerizing a mixture of butadiene and styrene in a styrene-acrylonitrile synthetic resin latex the synthetic resin particles preferably contain 50 to 95 per cent by weight of styrene, the butadiene content of the butadiene-styrene mixture is preferably 30 to 90 per cent by weight and the mixture of butadiene and styrene is preferably 5 to 75 per cent by weight of the combined weight of the butadiene, styrene and synthetic resin. In examples, polymerization is effected in the presence of potassium persulphate as catalyst, dodecyl mercaptan as regulator, the emulsifying agent being a sodium stearate soap or a mixture of sodium isopropyl naphthalene sulphonate and the condensation product of formaldehyde with naphthalene sulphonic acid; coagulation is effected by the addition of acetic acid. The Specification also refers to the polymerization of the styreneacrylonitrile mixture in natural rubber latex but states that the mixture obtained is incompatible. Specification 632,722 is referred to.
