648,398. Stuffing-box and piston packing WIRZ, E. Oct. 22, 1947, No. 28226. Convention date, Nov. 24, 1939. [Classes 122(i) and 122(v)] An annular packing means for hydraulic jacks comprises an elastic packing member 1 which, in its relaxed condition, has two splayed lips 3, 4 which are integral with a yoke portion 2 and when the member 1 is mounted in position are urged toward each other under initial strain, the lips 3, 4 having at their free ends surfaces 11, 12 of predetermined slope which seat on corresponding counter-faces of a supporting ring 9. Holes 10 are provided in the ring 9 to allow passage of pressure oil to the space 5 between the lips. Axial pressure may be applied to the member 1 by means of a threaded ring 8.
