Abstract

648,338. Suction cleaners. EUREKA WILLIAMS CORPORATION. Jan. 13, 1948, No. 1015. Convention date, March 19, 1947. [Class 8(i)] Nozzle and agitator elevating means in a motor-fan suction cleaner of the handle propelled type having a body 30, Fig. 2, supported by front and rear wheels and an upwardly facing converter port 60 for an offthe-floor cleaning tool 62 comprises an element, e.g. a U-shaped bracket 70, mounted on the body 30 so as to be movable, e.g. in slots 82 of guides 72, between retracted and projected positions below and above the lower edge of the front wheels 34, and normally biassed, e.g. by a leaf spring 84, to the retracted position; the element having actuating means, e.g. a lever 90, integral with a pivoted converter port cover 66 which when opened results in depression of the bracket 70. In a modification, the nozzle elevating means comprises an arm 210, Fig. 9, pivoted about a fixed shaft 214 and carrying a roller 204 for engagement with the floor. The arm 210 is rotated counterclockwise against a toggle spring 216 by a cross pin 234 of a foot pedal lever 228 pivoted to a body lug 230 bearing against the.edge of a slot 236. The pin 234 also extends through a slot 262 of a lever 264 pivoted to the shaft 214 and having a finger 266 which, on further depression of the lever 228 engages the end of a link 248 to open the port cover. The latter may be opened by hand without the necessity of depressing the lever 228. The belt 52 is accommodated in slots in the side walls 92, 94, Fig. 3, of the converter tool and the space between the strands are closed by a valve 98 which is biassed to the open position-by a spring 104 secured to the converter.
