Abstract
647,551. Electromagnetic interrupters. LEEDS & NORTHRUP CO. Jan. 23, 1948, No. 2132. Convention date, Jan. 31, 1947. [Class 38(v)] An electromagnetic interrupter which may be used.for converting D.C. to A.C. or vice versa comprises a reed 25 carrying a magnet or piece of soft iron 27 and set in vibration by A.C. in a coil 21, spring contacts 11 operated by the reed, an iron housing 23 for the coil to prevent magnetic leakage from the coil to the contacts and electrostatic shielding for isolating the contacts comprising a metallic shield 28 and a metallic casing 30 for the leads 29. The contact unit is rigidly connected to the coil unit by a member 12 and is resiliently mounted on the base by two spring arms 14 to provide a shock mount. The casing 30 consists of a number of flexible members which bear against a fixed member and so damp the vibration of the assembly 10, 11, 12. The contact unit, Fig. 5, consists of two fixed contacts 33A, 33B, adjusted by screws 39, and engaged by movable contacts 34A, 34B, themselves actuated by the reed 25, which may or may not carry contacts 40. All the co-operating contacts may consist of cylinders of platinum arranged perpendicularly to each other.
