Abstract

Steel billets, ingots &c. are moved intermittently through a combined preheating and slow heating zone and a final rapid heating zone, the zones being separately fired and draughted. The design of furnace, (see Group XII), is such that the first zone can be heated by separate burners above and below the steel, and in both zones the burners and draught openings are so disposed that the flame travels across the furnace chambers in a plane parallel to the steel but shielded from contact therewith by returning combustion products.
