645,039. Blasting explosives. DAVIDSON, S. H., RIGBY, C. H., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. May 3, 1948, No. 12067. [Class 9 (ii)] Ammonium nitrate blasting explosives have included therein say ¢-5 per cent of a waterswellable and soluble ether of a macro-molecular polysaccharide in disintegrated fibrous or powder form such as methyl cellulose, methyl ethyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose, or the sodium salts of carboxymethyl cellulose or carboxymethyl starch. In examples (1) ammonium nitrate containing 1 per cent china clay and sodium chloride are mixed with methyl cellulose and the resulting mixture incorporated with a nitrated 80:20 glycerine-ethylene glycol mixture absorbed on woodmeal. (2) Nitrated 80:20 glycerine-ethylene glycol mixture and 25:75 trinitrotoluene-dinitrotoluene mixture are mixed with nitrocellulose and the resulting jelly incorporated with woodmeal, oat husks, anthracite sulphur and chalk; this mixture is incorporated with a mixture of ammonium nitrate containing 1 per cent china clay, sodium nitrate, and sodium salt of carboxymethyl cellulose. Other materials mentioned are o-nitrotoluene, paraffin wax, and aluminium powder.
