Abstract
1278007 Explosive compositions IRECO CHEMICALS 15 Oct 1970 [17 Oct 1969] 49004/70 Heading C1D An explosive composition comprises 32-45% by weight of an oxidizer which is primarily ammonium, alkali metal, or alkaline earth metal perchlorate, 10-20% by weight of an aqueous liquid, 40-65% by weight of finelydivided aluminium or magnesium and a selfexplosive, and 0À1-2% by weight of a gelling agent comprising a water-swelling gum and a cross-linking agent together with another gum which has a higher temperature stability than guar gum. The aqueous liquid may contain minor proportions of ethyl or methyl alcohol, ethylene or diethylene glycol, formamide, dimethyl formamide, or analogous aldehydes, ketones or ethers. The self-explosive may be TNT, RDX, composition B, or PETN. A suitable gelling agent is guar gum or starch, together with xanthan gum which is a colloidal material containing mannose, glucose, potassium glucuronate and acetyl radicals; boric acid or alkali metal dichromate may be added to crosslink the guar gum. Other ingredients referred to are sodium nitrate, a finely divided carbonaceous fuel, and ammonium phosphate as a water-aluminium stabilizer.
