Abstract
643,749. Automatic control systems for gyroscopes. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO., Inc. Nov. 18, 1947, No. 30596. Convention date, Nov. 29, 1946. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Groups XX and XL (c)] An automatic control system is provided whereby a gyroscope is maintained in the vertical from a remotely situated gravityresponsive element. As shown, the gravity responsive element comprises two pendulums 50, 51 mounted with their pivot axes at right angles on a platform 43 which is stabilized in azimuth by a motor 61 controlled through an amplifier 63 from a Selsyn signal generator 56 connected to a Selsyn transmitter on a gyrocompass. The platform 43 is universally mounted by a ring 45 about axes 48, 49 and 46, 47 parallel with the axes of the gyrovertical 16 and is maintained in correspondence with the plane of the gyrorotor by Selsyn systems 25, 72 and 24, 73 and motors 76, 82 about these axes respectively. Deviation of the platform from the horizontal and thus of the plane of the gyrorotor are detected by E-shaped transformer pick-offs co-operating with the pendulums 50, 51 and the resulting signals are fed into the primary coils 65, 66 of a resolving transformer 64 which resolves the deviated signals into components corresponding to the gyro axes in the secondary coils 67, 68. The resolved signals are applied to torque motors 33, 34 which process the gyro to restore it to the vertical. Specification 360,428 is referred to.
