Abstract

642,893. Motor attachments for bicycles. SOC. ANON. MOTO GARELLI. Aug. 1, 1946, Nos. 23020 and 23021. Convention dates, Aug. 24, 1945 and Nov. 9, 1945. [Class 79 (iii)] A small internal combustion engine for driving the tyre of the driving wheel of a bicycle through a friction roller is mounted on the bicycle by means of two links each connected at one end to the frame and at the other to the engine body, the links being disposed so as to mount the engine below the pedal crankshaft and between the planes swept by the pedal crank assemblies, and spring means being provided to urge the roller against the tyre. The spring means may be capable of sufficient deformation to permit the roller to be disengaged from the tyre. As shown in Fig. 2 brackets 15, 7 secured to the bicycle frame are pivotally connected at 12, 121 to the links 10, 10<SP>1</SP>, whose other ends are pivotally connected at 11, 11<SP>1</SP> to the engine 1, so that the engine is disposed below the pedal crankshaft 6 and between the planes swept by the pedal crank assemblies, a helical spring 13 being arranged between the pivots 11, 12<SP>1</SP> to urge the roller 4 against the tyre 5, the roller 4 being driven by the engine through gears 2, 3. In a modification, Fig. 1, not shown, both links are pivotally connected to the bracket secured to the chain stays. In an alternative construction, Fig. 3, the links 10, 101 are formed as spring blades each rigidly connected at each end to the frame and the engine 1. The rear link passes through the chain stays, but if the stays are close together, the rear spring link is made of two narrower blades one on each side of the stays. In a modification, Fig. 4, not shown, the engine is mounted by means of one spring link and one pivoted link. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also comprises arrangements in which the engine is disposed above the driving wheel and is arranged either horizontally or vertically. The engine is mounted by means of either two spring blades or one pivoted link and one spring blade. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
