Abstract

642,488. Magnetrons. M-O VALVE CO., Ltd., and WILLSHAW, W. E. June 18, 1948, Nos. 16402 and 29946. [Class 39 (i)] A resonant cavity magnetron oscillator of the " rising sun " type has at least one polepiece pierced by a hole coaxial with the electron orbit space and adapted to act as a wave-guide either to provide an output path or to control the oscillation frequency. As shown, the magnetron comprises a cathode 11, Fig. 1, sealed to a magnetic polepiece 5 by a glass insert 8, a cylindrical copper block 1 having cavities 4, Fig. 2, and a polepiece 5<SP>1</SP> apertured at 22 to receive a plug 27 of dielectric material to form a wave-guide coupled to a cavity 25 tuned by piston 28. The wave-guide 22 may be used to draw an output from the oscillator, or may be used to move the oscillator, output then being taken from one of the cavities 4 by wave guides 16, 20. The polepieces 5, 51 are preferably sealed to the block 1, and the con. tainer so formed sealed by a ceramic plate 26. According to the Provisional Specification, the aperture 22 may have radial slots in register with the cavities 4, and the aperture 22 may flare outwardly away from the block 1.
