Abstract

641,497. Measures of length. BILTON, W. J. Oct. 30, 1947, No. 28987. [Class 106 (ii)] An instrument for measuring linear dimensions comprises a rule 7 carried on a mounting, said mounting including a sleeve 4 slidable on a post 2 supported on a base-member 1 and said sleeve being adjustable along the post by means of a screw-threaded member 15 engageable in the post, a spring 14 disposed between said sleeve and base member to maintain said sleeve in engagement with a head 16 on said screwthreaded member, and means for preventing rotary movement of said mounting on said post. The rule 7 is clamped against a shoulder 9 formed on a plate 8 by a lug 10 secured to a screw 11 which can be moved longitudinally by rotating a knurled nut 13. The plate 8 is connected to the sleeve 4 by a web 5. Rotation of the sleeve on the post may be prevented by a pin 17 fixed in the base and extending into a bore in the web 5 or a key-way in the post 2 may be engaged by a key formed in the sleeve. In use, the scale is adjusted vertically by rotation of the head 16 until a large scale division is at the height from which it is desired to make measurements.
