Abstract

638,030. Air-conditioning apparatus. SOC. ANON DES ETABLISSEMENTS NEU., and DENIS, L. July 8, 1947,No. 18018. Convention date, Feb. 4..[Class 137] An air-conditioning system, particularly for use on ships, vehicles and aircraft, comprises a cooling section in which air is compressed and is subsequently cooled, and expanded whilst doing work, and an air-heating section, having a by-pass, so that external air may be supplied thereby, to the space to be ventilated, either heated or unheated, and such air may be mixed with cooled air before admission to the space, or cooled air alone may be admitted. As shown spaces 44 in a ship are to be ventilated. Air enters the suction pipe 2 of an air-compressor 1 driven by a power unit controlled by a regulator 4. The compressed air is cooled at 7, e.g. by heat exchange with sea water, and is further compressed by a compressor 5 driven by a motor 6 which utilizes the expansion of the compressed air. Coolers 8 are arranged between the compressor 5 and the motor 6, condensed water being collected for return to the air stream at a later stage. The air leaving the motor 6 expands further in a chamber 9 having baffles 30 which remove further water from the air. The outlet of the chamber 9 is connected to the hot air system, a valve 17 determining the degree of effective connection. The hot air system comprises an air intake 38 and a fan 13 which delivers into passages 14, 16 the former having a heater 12 which is byepassed by a passage containing a damper 15. By adjustment of the dampers 15, 17 and regulation of the heater 12 and the cooling-section, any desired mixture or selection of unheated, heated, or cooled air may be admitted to the space 44. The air from the heating or cooling sections, or both, passes through a mixing chamber 31 into the space 44 and a corresponding quantity of air is withdrawn by a fan 29 through a pipe 27. A pipe 36 permits a quantity, regulable by the valve 39, of waste air to be mixed with the fresh air entering the fan 13. The condensed water is sprayed into the mixing chamber 31 either by air pressure or by a pump 32, the spray being regulated by a hygrostat 33 operating through a relay 34 on a valve 35. Alternatively, a separate water supply 351 is used, or humidification may be effected by the injection of steam. A thermostat 25 in the vent pipe 27 acts through a relay 26 to swing the damper 24 to adjust the proportions of cooled and other air entering the space 44. A manual adjustment 28 also is provided. A thermostat 40 controls the regulator 41, e.g. a steam valve, of the heater 12. Pressure in the chamber 9 is maintained constant by a member 10 which acts through a relay 11 on the regulator 4 of the power unit 3.
