Abstract
638,017. Rotary-cylindrical valves; nozzles. PROUT, E. W. May 21, 1947, No. 13693. Convention date, March 4, 1946. [Classes 69 (iii) and 135] In a valve, e.g. a fire-fighting valve having multiple nozzles, a tubular element in the discharge passageway is movable axially towards the cylindrical valve closure member by liquid pressure acting against sealing means preventing passage of liquid around the outer end of the element, so that the inner end seals the member. Water may be discharged through the valve rotor 5, Fig. 1, to the main nozzle 3 or, on turning the rotor by the handle 6, through the passage 8, rotor passage 7 and passage 9 leading to a fog nozzle. Each outlet from the rotor chamber 4 is counterbored at 11, Fig. 2, to accommodate a ring 13 having at one end a surface 15 for sealing with the rotor and at the other end a lip 16 entering a step 12. In the cavity 17 between a shoulder at the base of the lip and a shoulder at the base of the counterbore fits a resilient channel-shaped sealing ring 18. Pressure acts in the channel, because of clearance afforded between the ring 13 and its bore 11 and between the rotor and its chamber, to urge the ring towards the rotor. When the valve is open the sealing pressure is reduced by the venturi effect of the high velocity flow through the nozzle so that the rotor may be easily turned.
