Abstract
622,234. Relief valves. KEELAVITE CO., Ltd., and CHITTENDEN, G. E. July 30, 1946, No. 22606. [Class 135] In a pressure relief valve, a hollow, spring- loaded closure member F is opened in a direction opposite to that of the resulting fluid flow through the relief port E<SP>2</SP>, by the pressure of the fluid in the inlet chamber B acting on an annular pressure area L. A deflecting member J extends from the outlet chamber C through the relief port and into the bore of the closure member, a small clearance being provided between these two members. The bore of the closure member communicates through a passage F<SP>2</SP> with the space above the closure member and through a passage in the deflecting member with a point in the outlet chamber substantially out of the path of fluid flow. This construction is stated to reduce valve chatter, and to ensure that the valve closes at the desired pressure irrespective of the rate of fluid flow.
