Abstract

637,671. Windscreen-wipers. PRODUCTIVE INVENTIONS, Inc. July 22, 1947, No. 19651. Convention date, March 23, 1944. [Class 138 (i)] A windscreen-wiper arm comprises an inner driving and supporting member having a nut inseparably. but rotatably associated therewith, the nut engaging a threaded driving spindle so that rotation of the nut in opposite directions moves the inner driving and supporting member into or out of driving engagement with the spindle. The wiper arm carrier 6 is pivoted at 7 to the member 5 of channel-section which is secured to the drive spindle 13 by the nut 25. The nut has an enlarged portion 26 which is held between the outer face of the channel section and the inner member 21 so that the nut is captive but is free to rotate. When the nut is tightened, the inner member 21 of relatively soft metal is forced on to the bevelled shoulder 14 of the spindle, which may be provided with hardened teeth. Conversely, the member 21 may be provided with hardened teeth and the shoulder 14 left plain, or both the shoulder and the member 21 may be serrated. To remove the wiper assembly from the spindle the nut 25 is unscrewed, and if the assembly has corroded on to the spindle, continued unscrewing of the nut forces the assembly off the spindle.
