Abstract
636,748. Tensioning thread &c. BROOKS, E. J. May 22, 1947, No. 13833. Convention date, May 31, 1946. [Class 120 (ii) [Also in Group XVI] A thread &c. tensioning device for use in winding golf balls &c., comprises an opentopped container 5 for liquid, preferably mercury, an upper casing 4 having an open lower part slidably engaging the upper part of the container 5, a shaft 21 rotatably mounted in one or both walls of the casing 4, a paddle wheel 27 mounted .on the shaft 21 and partly immersed in the liquid, and a pulley 23 mounted on the shaft 21 and about which the thread &c. 42 from supply 41 is wrapped. The blades 28 of the paddle wheel are preferably radially arranged and of uniform width throughout the greater part of their length. The maximum amount of immersion of the blades 28 in the mercury may be varied by vertically adjusting the lower container 5, carried by a base plate 14, by means of a hand wheel 16 and screwed spindle 15.
