Abstract
636,677. Rotary furnaces. TITAN CO., AKTIESELSKABET. Nov. 18, 1946, No. 34171. Convention date, April 30, 1942. [Class 51 (ii)] [Also in Group II] A method for the reduction of iron oxide consists in feeding the oxide and sufficient carbonaceous material to serve as fuel and as reducing agent into one end of a rotary furnace, introducing air for combustion of the fuel into the furnace at intervals along the length thereof and removing the reduced iron at the other end of the furnace whereby a progressive heating and then reduction of the oxide is effected along the length of the furnace and in which method air is admitted at positions at intervals along the region of reduction and the region of heating and in amounts sufficient to burn to carbon dioxide substantially the whole of the carbon monoxide produced by the reduction. 'As shown in the Figure, air is admitted to a rotary furnace through tubes c provided with exterior valves d, each tube having an opening e disposed so that the entering current of air does not hit the wall of the furnace and cause local overheating, gases passing from the furnace to a chimney h. The charge of ore and fuel enters the furnace at A and leaves it at B. In a modification the tubes may be provided with gravity-operated control valves. Specification 343,954 is referred to..
