635,849. Sensitive photographic material. KODAK, Ltd., and KNOTT, E. B. Aug. 26, 1947, No. 23616. [Class 98 (ii)] The tendency for a visible image to develop in a " Type I " emulsion (i.e. one which forms latent image mostly inside the grains) on development in a surface developer is reduced or eliminated by mixing with such enulsion before coating and exposure, up to 15 per cent, a less sensitive emulsion of any type (calculated as the silver contents of the two emulsions), the relative speeds of the two emulsions being such that when both emulsions are exposed to the amount of light necessary to produce substantially maximum density in the more sensitive emulsion in a specified internal developer which includes metal, hydroquinone, and hypo for 4 minutes at 20‹ C.., the less sensitive emulsion gives no measurable density when treated for 4 minutes at 20‹ C. in the same developer without the hypo (i.e. a surface developer). The material may contain more than one " Type I emulsion, and these emulsions may have different colour sensitivities. In example 1, to 3500 ccs. of a fast " Type I emulsion made as described in example 1 of Specification 635,841 is added 500 ccs. of a " Type II " fine-grained slow silver chloride emulsion (i.e. one which forms latent image'mostly on the surface of the grains). In example 2, the procedure is similar, using a fine-grained slow silver bromide emulsion which forms both internal and surface latent image. Specifications 581,772 and 581,773 also are referred to.
