[Class 97 (i)] [Also in Group XXXVIII] To improve the amount of light from an elongated source projected by an objective on to a film after passage through a light modulating device for sound recording a condenser lens assembly comprising crossed cylindrical lenses forms an image of the shorter dimension of the source at the light modulating device and a separate image of the longer dimension of the source beyond the device and preferably at the objective. As shown, the source has a coiled filament 2, an image of the shorter dimension of which is formed in the plane 8 of a ribbon light valve or other light modulating device by a pair of cylindrical lenses 9 and a cylindrical lens 11 with its cylinder axis perpendicular to those of the lenses 9, a mask 12 limiting the longer dimension of the beam, and an image of this mask is formed in the plane 6 of the film by the objective 4 at the front lens of which an image of the longer dimension of the filament is formed by the condensers. A small cylindrical lens 13 is arranged near the film to form an image of the plane 8 thereat. Specifications 347,261 and 398,257 are referred to.
