Abstract

634,088. Valve amplifying circuits. SADIRCARPENTIER. June 21, 1946, No. 18750. Convention date, June 21, 1945. [Class 40 (vi)] The negative feedback applied to an amplifier across an impedance is controlled by a D.C. voltage applied to a valve whose anode-cathode resistance shunts the impedance. In one embodiment, Fig. 3, the cathode resistance 5 of an amplifier valve 1 is shunted by a control valve 8 with its cathode connected to the cathode of valve 1. The amount of negative feedback applied to the amplifier valve 1 from a following stage 2 is varied by a negative control voltage applied to the grid of valve 8. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), part of the output of the following stage 2 is applied to the grid of the control valve. The feedback to the amplifier 1 varies according to the phase and magnitude of the energy applied to the grid of the control valve, and may become positive. In a further modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the cathode resistance of the amplifier valve is shunted by a parallel tuned circuit, and a fraction of the output of the following stage is fed to the grid of the control valve through a filter network. This enables the response of the amplifier to be reduced round the resonant frequency of the tuned circuit, and to be increased by an amount depending on the control voltage for frequencies within the pass band of the filter. In another embodiment, Fig. 5, the anode of the control valve 8 is connected to the cathode of the amplifier valve 1 through a blocking condenser 12. A portion of the output of the following stage 2 is fed to the grid of valve 8 through a potentiometer 13, 14. In a modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), part of the input to the amplifier is fed to the grid of the control valve, so that the amount of negative feedback is reduced for frequencies contained in the input, and the gain is reduced for unwanted frequencies. The amplifier may form part of a receiver, when the automatic volume control voltage may be applied to the control valve.
