Abstract
633,302. Seats ; bed settees. HARDY, H. Feb. 19, 1948, No. 4972. [Class 52 (ii)'] An arm chair is provided with a seat pivoted at its front to the chair frame and at its rear to the lower end of the back rest which is also pivoted, intermediate of its ends, to bars slidably mounted in the arms of the chair so that the mclinations of the seat and back may be adjusted by the occupant by varying his posture. The arm chair may be converted into a bed. The seat 1 is pivoted at 2 in sockets 3 on the chair frame and at its rear to the back rest 6 at 5, the back rest also being pivoted at 9 to slide bars 7 guided in the arms 8. To convert the chair into a bed the back rest is released from the slide bars 7 and is interconnected to the seat by stays 33. The seat and back are then rotated rearwardly bringing the foot portion 19, which is pivoted to the seat, with it, rollers on the portion 19 being guided by the members 39. The chair frame is divided into two sub-frames 17, 18 pivoted together at 26 and releasably locked at the rear. After unlocking the sub-frame 17 is swung upwardly and forwardly until the arms 8 rest on the floor the pivoting hinges being such that the arms 8 approach one another to serve as a support for the foot portion 19. The stays 33 are then removed and the back rest, seat and portion 19 are then supported horizontally to form a bed. In a modification the chair frame is not divided into sub-frames but a support for the foot portion 19 is slidable from within the chair frame. Pins 13 or other means are provided for locking the back rest in its adjusted position when in chair position.
