Abstract
A ceramic glaze or bond for difficultly-wettable refractory or abrasive material consisting of graphite, silicon carbide, fused alumina, or mixtures thereof, is produced by fusing thereon a silicate melt capable of forming a ceramic coating and including an agent for reducing the surface tension of the melt, the agent being molybdenum, tungsten, uranium, vanadium, or their compounds. The coating may consist of a ferro-manganese-silicate glaze, to which is added a small amount of molybdenum, and the coating is applied by firing the article. Alternatively, the agent may be in the form of the sodium or ammonium molybdate, tungstate, uranate or vanadate and may be applied by wetting the article with an aqueous solution thereof. If the coating is in the nature of a borosilicate glass, the heated article can be plunged into a solution of borax containing in suspension additional borax and potter's flint, together with the agent.
