Abstract
631,629. Excavating machines. NORDBERG MANUFACTURING CO. Aug. 22, 1947, No. 23309. Convention date, Sept. 16, 1946. [Class 68 (i)] A machine for removing ballast from between rail sleepers 1 comprises a carriage A on which is mounted a wheeled carriage B that can be moved laterally of the carriage A by a hydraulic ram 27 connected between them. The carriage B carries a pivotally mounted U-shaped boom supporting an endless chain fitted with picks and scrapers, the chain being driven through suitable gearing from an engine 25. In use, the carriage B is advanced to one side of the carriage A and the boom rotated about the pivot X, it being under control of a ram 28 so that the chain at the end of the boom commences digging out the ballast and continues to do so until the nose D of the boom is approximately horizontal so that, when the carriage B is withdrawn from the side of the carriage A, the nose D advances into the ballast. To ensure removal of all the ballast between the sleepers and leave a trench having short horizontal shoulders and sides sloping at 45 degrees to a horizontal bottom, which preferably slopes downwards from the centre of the rails, the carriage A is moved along the rails. The nose of the boom may be adjustable.
