Abstract
A viscous solution, which dries into water-insoluble, fire-resistant hard glossy films, is prepared by dissolving 25-125 parts tertiary zinc orthophosphate or ortho-arsenate, or a mixture thereof, in cold concentrated (35 per cent) aqueous ammonia, equivalent to 35 parts by weight of anhydrous ammonia. A complex zinc phosphato- (or arsenato-) zinc ammine is produced. Up to 10 per cent of the dry weight of zinc, cupric, cadmium, nickelous, cobaltous or manganous hydroxide, or silver oxide, may be added to the solution. The solutions are suitable for protecting say, timber against fire, weather and pests (fungus), and any tendency of the films formed to crack may be suppressed by adding pigments such as zinc or iron oxides, china clay, mica powder or carbon black. Such solutions can be used as paints.
