Abstract
629,234. Slab floors and roofs. MOLLENDORF, J. D., and SCHMIDT, K. C. Oct. 3, 1945, No. 25708. Convention date, June 28, 1944. [Class 20(iv)] Slab floors and roofs are formed by placing panel units alongside one another, each panel unit comprising a number of precast hollow concrete tiles 26, Fig. 2, assembled with their end faces abutting. Each tile has a longitudinal groove 32 along each side adjacent the base for the reception of reinforcing bars 40 which are tensioned to such a degree that the tiles remain under compression below the central axis of the panel under both dead and live loads. Tendency towards buckling of the unstressed side of the panes is neutralised by providing additional longitudinal grooves 34 along each side adjacent the upper surface for the reception of further bars 48 which are tensioned to a less extent than the bars 40. The compression stress applied to each panel unit is approximately equal to 24 x 10<SP>3</SP> lbs. per sq. inch minus Mc/I X Es/Ec where M=bending movement, c = distance in inches from bars to neutral axis of panel, I=moment of inertia, Es, Ec=modulus of elasticity of the steel bars and concrete respectively. A second form of tile, Fig. 8, has no upper longitudinal grooves but buckling is prevented by a single tensioned rod 66 positioned immediately above the upper surface of the tiles.
