Abstract
629,143. Aircraft power plant. WHITTLE, F. July 18, 1947, No. 19233. [Class 4] [Also in Group XXVI] An aircraft power plant installation comprises two or more gas turbine units grouped in echelon formation relatively to the longitudinal axis of the machine and so arranged that the frontal aspect or outline of each unit (except the leading unit) is partly obscured by that of the unit ahead of it, in order that the aggregate effective frontal area of the group is less than the sum of the frontal areas of the several units. Figs. 1 and 2 show a group of two gas turbines 1, 1 arranged in a nacelle 2, the outboard unit being arranged with its compressor casing adjacent the jet tube of the inboard unit. As shown, the turbine-compressor axes of the two units are inclined to the fore- and-aft axis of the aircraft and the rear ends of the jet tubes are parallel thereto, but the axes of both units may be parallel to the aircraft axis. Fig. 5 shows a group of three turbines with their turbine-compressor axes parallel to the aircraft axis, but with the jet tubes of the inboard and outboard units diverging fanwise. The exhaust ducts of some or all of the units may converge into a common duct. In the further embodiment according to Fig. 7 the exhaust ducts 1 of two turbines 2 converge to an annular duct 3 housing a turbine 5 driving a pusher propeller 10, or a ducted fan, the turbine exhaust being discharged through two lateral ducts 7 disposed one on either side of the propeller or fan.
