Abstract

629,134. Wheels for vehicles. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., and CHATTERTON, P. B. May 23, 1947, No. 13859. [Class 144 (i)] A wheel structure comprises a well base rim 1 attached to a disc part 2, and a radially and axially resilient V-section fairing 11 which has a periphery approximating in diameter to the outside diameter of the rim and engaging said rim, the fairing having an outer flexible part 12 extending from its periphery radially inwards with a contour blending with the general profile of a tyre 15 to a median diameter part 16 approximating to the innermost diameter of the rim, and an inner flexible part 17 extending from said median diameter radially inwards and axially outwards, said fairing being retained in position by snapengagement means disposed remote from the median diameter part 16. The retaining means shown in Fig. 1 comprises three studs 6 welded to the wheel disc 2 and disposed symmetrically around a circle of less diameter than the innermost diameter of the wheel rim 1. Each stud has two grooves 9, 10, and is of smaller diameter at the bottom of groove 9 than at the bottom of groove 10, said groove 10 being the nearer to the wheel disc 2 and arranged to engage a bead 18 formed at the inner periphery of the fairing 11. A hub cap 21 is retained by snap-engagement with the outer groove 9 of the studs. An aperture is provided in the fairing to allow access to the tyre inflation valve. Fig. 3 shows an embodiment wherein the outer periphery of the fairing 11 is formed with an annular channel 26 housing a rubber ring 28, circular in crosssection and projecting above the periphery of the fairing by approximately one-quarter of its cross-sectional diameter. The rim 1 is formed with an annular channel 25 at its edge 14 arranged to engage with the rubber ring 28 and retain the fairing 11. This arrangement may be used in lieu of the studs 6, the fairing being integral with the hub cap, Fig. 4 (not shown).
