Abstract
629,023. Safety fuzes. CALDWELL, W. A., OWENS, R. D. J., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. April 16, 1947, No. 10075. [Class 9 (i)] A waterproof safety fuze having a solid non- porous extruded core of thermoplastic nature comprising a mixture of pulverulent oxidising and reducing agents bonded together with a thermoplastic bonding agent in an envelope of continuous coating of waterproofing composition is made with diameter between 0.080 inches and 0.130 inches. The extruded core is 0.04 to 0.06 inches in diameter and provided with one or more textile coverings waterproofed with coatings of bitumen and rubber compound finished with a textile counter held in place by a colour varnish. Alternatively a continuous covering of polyvinyl chloride or polythene may be applied by extrusion, with or without one or more textile coverings. Two examples are given, in which parts are by weight. In the first, the pulverulent mixture consists of 42.4 parts of red lead, 33.9 parts of potassium nitrate and 23.7 parts of silicon ; 79 parts of this powder are bound with 21 parts of nitrocellulose plasticised with half its weight of dibutyl phthalate containing small amounts of diphenylamine. The composition is extruded at 100‹ C. around a 36 S.W.G. copper wire to form a core of 0.040 inches diameter. This core is coated with spinning cotton, countering cotton, bitumen, polyvinyl chloride and colour varnish to give a fuze 0.099 to 0.108 inches in diameter.
