Abstract
628,328. Vehicle suspensions; detachable axles. FEDDEN, Ltd., R., SENKOWSKI, A., and WATERS, C. D. Nov. 1, 1946, No. 32424. [Class 108 (ii)] In a vehicle suspension, the sole support for a wheel 9 comprises an arm 15 extending from a torsion element 10 that is arranged transversely of the chassis with its inner end higher than its outer end. The torsion element is also arranged in such a manner that its inner end is nearer the vertical plane containing the wheel axis than is the outer end. A rubber sleeve 13 is bonded to an inner metal sleeve 12 and an outer split metal sleeve 11, the flanges 14 of the latter being separated by shims 11a and secured to the vehicle chassis. The wheel arm 15 has a forked end, the prongs 15b, 15c of which are bolted to radial flanges on the tube 12. Alternatively, the sleeve 12 may be secured to the chassis and the arm 15 given flanges adapted to be bolted to those of the outer sleeve 11. A stub-axle 16 is bolted to the end of the arm 15. Means such as those described in Specification 628,329 may be provided for adjusting the torsional pre-load of the spring 10, and the arms 15 may lead, instead of trailing behind, the wheels.
