Abstract

511,808. Road-vehicle undercarriages. PORSCHE, F. June 7, 1938. No. 16949. Convention date, July 28, 1937. [Class 108 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXI] One wheel 5 of an independently.sprung twin wheel is carried by an axle tube 3 articulated to the differential casing 4 or framework of the vehicle, whilst the other wheel 9 is carried by an auxiliary axle tube 7 articulated at 6, e.g., by a rubber cushion, to the main axle tube 3. The suspension spring 11 preferably acts on the auxiliary tube 7 by means of a plunger 12 passing through the main tube, a swinging strut 13 connecting the main tube to the vehicle frame. Separate springs may, however, be employed for the main and auxiliary axle tubes, and the auxiliary tube may surround the main tube instead of being within it. The point of articulation 6 between the tubes is preferably such that the two wheels are equally loaded, and they remain so when the spring 11 yields. Where, as shown, the twin wheel is a driving wheel, the outer wheel 9 is carried by the driving shaft 2 which is supported in an oscillating bearing 8 carried by the auxiliary tube 7, arid the inner wheel 5 is driven from the outer wheel through resilient coupling members 10. Link members may replace the axle tubes shown.
