[Classes 110(i) and 110(iii)] Turbine-type compressors-cooling: In order to minimise the work of compres. sion in a rotary dynamic axial-flow compressor, particularly for gas turbine plant, the medium is cooled during the actual compression, by liquid cooling of the surfaces carrying all the sets of vanes, the compressing being preferably thus made substantially isothermal. The compressor has at least two sets of relatively-moving vanes, and in order to distribute the cooling between the sets, the compression work is preferably distributed uniformly by arranging the blade angles so that the rates between pressure rises in the successive rows of vanes in the same stage is between 0.4 and 2.5. The heat conduction of the vane fixing is made not less than that of the vanes themselves, by providing a suitable contact area or by welding or soldering the vanes. In the particular embodiment described, Fig. 3 (not shown), the compressor has a water-jacketed stator and a hollow rotor drum through which water is circulated by way of a hollow shaft and a pipe concentric therewith. Gas turbines.-The Specification describes a plant using the compressor, Fig. 2 (not shown), in which air passes successively through the compressor, a heatexchanger, a combustion chamber, a turbine driving the compressor, a second combustion chamber, a load turbine, and the heat-exchanger. Boilers, with indirect heating of the working medium may replace the combustion chambers or be used in conjunction therewith. Other arrangements with larger or smaller numbers of units may be used.
