Abstract
627,972. Treating grain; filters. SILVER, H. F. Dec. 28, 1945, No. 35088. [Classes 46 and 58] [Also in Groups II, VI and XXX] Treating grain.-Apparatus for treating cereal grain with liquids includes a sinuous conduit having a plurality of sections, each comprising a pair of substantially vertical portions connected together at the bottom to form downward and upward courses for the grain, means in said conduit for moving the grain through the successive sections, and a plurality of liquid conduits, each removing liquid from a point near the upper end of the upward course of one section and introducing said liquid again in said conduit at a point intermediate the upper and lower ends of the downward course of the preceding section. In a preferred embodiment cells are dispersed side by side in a single row, each cell consisting of a downward course provided by a smaller compartment formed by a housing 125, Fig. 16, and an upward course provided by a larger compartment formed by a cylindrical tank 126. Grain enters through an inlet 127 and the liquid through an inlet 142. A centrifugal impeller 130 is mounted in the lower end of housing 125 and discharges the mixture of liquid and solids through pipe 132 to the lower end of tank 126, the impeller being rotated by shaft 133 driven by means of a pulley 134. Due to the action of the impeller the discharge level 141 is above the inlet level 142 and liquid is removed from the solids by a rotating cylindrical screen device S, the grain being deposited on an apron 143 which forms an inlet for the downward course of the next cell. The liquid flows by gravity along pipe 128 from outlet 144 of one cell to inlet 142 of the previous cell, the liquid discharged from the first cell being carried from its outlet 144 to the next processing step. Filters.-Rotating screen devices may comprise screening or perforated material such as woven wire cloth in cylindrical form mounted on a suitable support or, in a preferred construction, the device has a central portion comprising a plurality of rings 70, Figs. 10 and 11, having circumferential slots 71 and longitudinally extending ribs 72 spaced about the inner periphery thereof, these ribs engaging the four ribs of a supporting spider 74, the ribs of the spider being provided with holes to provide free circulation of liquid. The slotted rings 70 are flanked at either end of the device by imperforate rings. During use the liquid flows through the slots 71 and along the spider to the ends of the screen. To maintain the slots of the rings 70 free from divided solid material a cleaning device may comprise a support 85 for a plurality of tines 86 which are positioned within slots 71. A cleaning device may also be constructed consisting of a plurality of endless link chains 87, Fig. 12, carrying horizontal rods 88 which extend across the rings 70, these chains engaging sprockets 89 mounted on the imperforate end rings of the filter, solid material being carried along the curved plate 91 and dropped into discharge space 92.
