Abstract
627,555. Propelling pencils. KRIEGSMAN, M. Jan. 9, 1946, No. 793. [Class 146 (iii)] In a propelling pencil of the kind in which the pencil lead 26 is held in a casing 25 slidable in the body portion 4 between an upper extreme position in which it is normally held by a spring 19, and a lower position to which it is pushed by a plunger 20 and in which position the lower clutch end 27 of the casing 25 expands to release the lead, the body 4 is open at both ends and is internally threaded to receive a lead gripping and guiding nose member 31 and an externally threaded sleeve 14 on which is threaded a guide member 23 for the plunger 20, and the casing 25 is guided in its axial movements by a circumferential ridge 13 engaging the bore of the sleeve 14, by the bore of an internal flange 9 in the body 4, and by a sleeve 28 slidably mounted in the nose member 31. The upper end of the sleeve 28 is slotted so as to grip frictionally the casing 25 and is internally coned at its lower end 37 to co-operate with the clutch 27. The normal position of the parts is as shown. To feed the lead the plunger 20 is depressed and carries with it the casing 25, lead 26 and sleeve 28 until the latter is arrested by engagement with a step 34 in the nose member 31 after which the continuing movement of the casing 25 allows the clutch 27 to open to release the lead. Upon release of the plunger the casing 25 and sleeve 28 are returned by the spring 19, passing freely over the lead until, after the sleeve is arrested by engagement with the flange 9, the clutch 27 is again closed to grip the lead. The pencil may house a single lead, or as shown be formed with a lead magazine 11.
