Abstract

The viscosity of aqueous alkali alginate spinning solutions is reduced to desired proportions by the addition of a water-soluble salt of hyposulphurous acid. Sodium hyposulphite ((Na2S2O4) is preferably used, and the viscosity is preferably reduced to a range of 35 to 70 seconds measured by descent of a steel ball of 1/8 th inch diameter through 20 cms. of a column of the solution at 25 DEG C. The pH of the solution should lie within the range of 6.0 to 9.5. Specifications 567,641 and 571,657 are referred to.
