Abstract
626,942. Shaft couplings. VICTORIA MACHINE TOOL CO., Ltd., COOPER, A. G., and FRYE, J. March 13, 1946, No. 7850. [Class 80 (ii)] An Oldham type coupling has rolling antifriction means for supporting end thrust between the elements of the coupling. In an embodiment for driving a tool 12 from a machine spindle 11, the driving spindle has slidably but not rotatably mounted thereon a collar 14 having a transverse keyway 4 which is engaged by a key 7 of a coupling member 5 which has a further key 6 engaging with a transverse keyway 3 in the end of a cap 13. Four rollers 9 are housed in the grooves 8 transverse to the keys and are arranged to be just proud of the surface of the coupling member 5. The assembly is held against axial movement by a stud 10 passing through clearing holes 15, 16 in the members 5, 13 respectively, slight axial adjustment of the coupling being provided by the screwed rings 33. The remote end of the cap 13 is bored to receive the shank of the tool 12 which is firmly held against the end of the bore 27 by wedge section locking keys 23 which co-operate with transverse grooves 21 in the shank, these keys are pressed inwards by a taper bored sleeve 28 which co-operates with the arcuate outer faces 25 of the keys when the sleeve is moved axially towards the tool by the screwed ring 30.
