Abstract
626,203. Uniting metals to glass. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL Ltd., (formerly PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd.). Dec. 31, 1947, No. 35190. Convention date, May 27, 1939. [Class 36] A wire 5 of metal having a melting point above 2000 C., for sealing through a vitreous envelope 8 has a layer 6 of quartz or quartz glass sealed on to it, thin in relation to the diameter D of the wire. The limits of thickness are that the wire should be more than .05 mm. diameter, and the layer of quartz not more than .24 mm. in the case of wire thicknesses up to .6 mm., and not more than .24+(D - .6).16 mm. for wires exceeding .6 mm. diameter. Tungsten, molybdenum and tantalum are mentioned as suitable metals, and a formula for molybdenum is also given, the thickness of quartz in this case being less than that for tungsten. A bead 7 of glass may be fused on to the quartz layer 6 between this and the envelope 8.
