Abstract

494,447. Uniting metal to quartz ; glass manufacture. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., FRANCIS, V. J., and PIRANI, M. Sept. 16, 1937, No. 25192. [Class 36] [Also in Group XXIII] A strip of metal more than 0À02 mm. thick is sealed through vitreous material having a thermal expansion somewhat greater than that of quartz by collapsing the walls of a tube of said material on to the strip and the vitreous material is then sealed to the quartz part of a sealed envelope. A strip of molybdenum 0À03-0À035 mm. thick or a strip of tungsten may be used and the vitreous material may comprise 90À5 per cent of silica, 7À5 per cent of alumina, 1 per cent of calcium oxide and 1 per cent of barium oxide or 94À5 per cent of silica and 5À5 per cent of alumina.
