Abstract
624,716. Compound sheet materials. BARNARD, R. H. Oct. 7, 1946, No. 29911. [Class 140] A method of making laminated materials comprises the steps of melting material adapted to be drawn into fibres, passing it through a plurality of serially-arranged groups of small apertures and collecting the exuded material in a continuous process by placing the exuded material of one group as a layer on the layer from the preceding group. The layers may then be subjected to pressure. Referring to the drawings, a melting chamber 10 has the lower portion subdivided into a number of drawing chambers 11, 11a, 11b and 11c. The material 11, e.g. glass, is maintained at a level above these chambers by a feeding mechanism which starts up when a circuit is broken by the level of the molten material dropping out of contact with the lower end of an electrode 19 and feeds material via hopper 17 over wiers 16 into main chamber 12. Any standard feeding mechanism may be used, but that described in Specification 610,564, [Group XXIII], is preferred. The melting chamber is heated by coils 23 and each drawing chamber by coils 24. Each of the drawing chambers is provided with a plurality of small apertures 13, 13a, 13b and 13c through which the molten material is exuded, the apertures may be of the same or different sizes, Figs. 2 and 4. Pressure may be applied to chamber 18 through conduit 22. Beneath and to each side of each row of apertures are high-pressure air conduits 25 and 26 provided with discharge outlets 27 and 28 directed towards one another. The air streams from these pick up the molten material and draw it into fine fibres which are collected in chambers 29, 29a, 29b and 29c, and then discharged on to a conveyer belt 20. The first layer may be delivered directly on to the belt or on to a collection sheet, e.g. a sheet of paper or felt, and a similar sheet may be placed on the topmost layer. The laminated mats 35 may each pass between hoods 36 and 37 which slightly heat it to cause the lamina to adhere together more firmly. Fig. 3 illustrates a modification on which the heating means 46, 46a, 46b may be applied in between formation of each layer and in which moisture-proof material, e.g. coated paper or cellophane supplied from rolls 54 may be placed between the laminµ. Spray heads 55 may supply adhesive materials to cause the laminµ to adhere to the vapour-proof material and synthetic resins may be sprayed on the mat from spray head 53. Fig. 5 illustrates a modification in which 61 and 61a are the melting chambers, 62 and 62a the heating hoods and in which rolls 63 and 63a are provided to compress the layers after they have been heated. A knife 64 cuts the sheets into lengths. The fibrous materials may be laid on a sheet 65 treated with adhesive 66 from head 67.
