Abstract
624,503. Rotary engines. SCHOEMAN, M. May 19, 1947, No. 13384. Convention date, May 22, 1946. [Class 110(ii)] An engine of the axially-sliding vane type comprises a rotor 1, on a shaft 3, carrying spring-pressed vanes 5 in slots, the vanes co-acting with a fixed cam-ring 10 while moving through the annular working chamber 2 which is of square or rectangular cross-section. Inlet and exhaust ports 31, 31a are provided in the surface of the cam. In the centre of the cam lobe 61 there is provided a sealing unit or abutment 26 which contacts constantly an inner cylinder wall until a vane approaches the lobe 61 when a cam 28 lever 40 and a rod 27 (or hydraulic means) withdraw the abutment into the lobe 61. Spring-pressed packing bars are provided around each vane and bars 19, 20, in the cam edges. The vanes may run on rollers. Where the machine operates as an internal-combustion engine, air or fuel mixture is applied by a compressor built on similar lines, a valve preventing feed into the engine cylinder until a pre-determined pressure in the compressor is reached. A groove in the wall of the compressor allows backflow of compressed gas to be behind a piston during its passage over the groove. Cooling or heating of the rotor is obtained by circulating a fluid in the rotor from inlet ports 14 to outlets 16. Fins may be provided. The casing may also be cooled. Balancing may be secured by counterweights. Lubricating ducts 32 are supplied by an external pump from a sump 34. Two exhaust ports may be arranged in series in a cylinder. Steam may be used as a working fluid.
