623,924. Electromagnets. BENDIX HOME APPLIANCES, Inc. May 30,1947, No. 14382. Convention date, Sept. 18, 1939. [Class 35] In an electromagnet of the plunger type the air gap between the pole faces and the plunger, when the latter is in its innermost position, is reduced by providing enlarged portions on opposite sides of the plunger registering with the pole faces and a spring acts between the frame and one side of the plunger during the last part of inward movement of the plunger. As shown, the enlarged portion 40 is closer to its adjacent pole face than the other portion 41 so as to bias the plunger towards the same pole face. To overcome the effect of any residual magnetism a spring 42, 43 fixed to the end of the plunger acts between the plunger and frame C when the plunger is in its innermost position. Combined brace and guide plates 16 of non-magnetic material guide the plunger 12 throughout its stroke, while lugs 33 formed in plates 16 cooperate with slots 29 so as to prevent complete withdrawal of the plunger.
