623,735. Gripper shuttle looms ; picking- motions; selvedges. SENIOR, H. April 11, 1946, No. 11173. [Classes 142 (ii), 142 (iii) and 142 (iv)] Selvedges.-A fabric in which the picks consist of separate lengths of weft has selvedges formed by thermosetting or thermoplastic material 30 (e.g. polythene strip or P.V.G. paste (applied by heated rollers 31 ; alternatively, high frequency eddy current, or infra red heating may be employed. To prevent the plastic from sticking to the rollers, a cellulose strip may also be applied and subsequently, removed from the fabric. Alternatively, the plastic may be in the form of selvedge warp threads. Picking motion ; guiding, cutting, and clamping weft.-As shown in Fig. 7, a pick p has been inserted by a double-ended gripper shuttle 1 operated by air pressure. The jaws 3a have released the pick which is clamped by one arm of an intermittently rotated lever 25 pressing the end of the pick into a slot. Meanwhile, weft &c. from the supply has been carried by a member 16 into a slot in the shuttle box 12 and gripped by jaws 3b, whereupon a cutter 22 (actuated by the shuttle) has cut the part leading to the selvedge s. Next, the pick p is released by the clamp 25 and beaten up by a reed 14. Gripper shuttle.-As the shuttle, Fig. 4, enters a box, a member 7 encounters a pin 11 and is displaced to close one pivoted jaw 3 against a fixed jaw 2, and to release the other jaw 3 (which is then opened by a spring 5). The pin 11 depends from the cutter 22, Fig. 7, which is spring loaded so that when the pin has moved the member 7 as far as possible,. continued movement of the shuttle into the box (after the weft has been gripped) operates the cutter.
