Weft is inserted in a shed by clamping it some distance from its end and projecting it into the shed in the form of a loop one leg of which is stationary and the other of which "unwinds" to straighten. In Figure 5 weft 30 is clamped at 34, is projected into the shed by rapidly rotating rollers 32, 33 and is severed by shears 36 to enable a length to be laid in the shed. Continuous feed rolls 37, 38 and a suction storage tube 39 are provided. In Figs. 6 and 8 the weft is projected by a roller 44 on a link 49 moved by a torsion bar operated lever 48. Clamps 62 close on the projected weft, it is severed by shears 63 sucked into a storage tube 45 when delivered by continuously operating feed rolls 42, 43 and held at the far side of the shed by a suction tube 65. In Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown) the weft may be clamped. at 11 to the projecting lever 10 or, to increase speed of withdrawal from the suction tube, be clamped at 21 on the machine frame. In the main embodiment Figs. 21 to 25 (only Fig. 22 shown) weft 136 is held by a clamp C and projected from a suction tube 185 by a roller 150. During projection the continuously supplied weft is sucked into a tube 190, a clamp D closes on the stationary leg of the loop, the clamp C opens so that the loop from the tube 190 is drawn into the tube 185 (see also 'sleys' below), the weft is severed near the clamp D so that its free end is drawn into the tube around the roller 150 ready for the next pick. Weft inserters; operating. A cam 164 (Fig. 12) acts on linkage 165, 166 to straighten a toggle 158 and to move the lever 150 having the picking roller 150 against the action of the torsion bar. The weft is picked by releasing the toggle 158. Checking picking sticks. The picking lever 152 is made of aluminium, is checked by eddy currents produced by magnets 183 and a buffer 181. Shedding. Heald frames (110) (Fig. 13, not shown) are attached to rods (118) which operate in slides (119), the rods being attached by clamps (117) to a cable (111) operated from a dobby (120). Sleys; beat-up motions. The reed (130) (Figs. 14 and 16, not shown) is attached to a frame (140) secured to a tube (139), which is pivoted about its axis by a crank (143). Suction tubes (201), (203) are adjustably attached to the reed (for different width fabrics) and communicate with the interior of the tube (139) which is subjected to vacuum through a bore 205 (Fig. 12).
