623,689. Control of motors. WHEELER, H. D., MOSSAY, P. A. H., and DEAN, J. May 13, 1947, No. 12925. [Class 38(iii)] An electric motor control system comprises a differentially wound exciter E1 connected to the motor M to be controlled so that alteration of the balance of currents in the exciter field windings by any variation of the motor current causes the exciter armature to buck or boost the current in the motor series winding s. A field F1 of the exciter carries the armature current of the motor M and another field F2 is separately and variably excited so that with normal motor current the exciter balances the normal volt drop in the series field. The torque of the motor is thereby maintained inversely proportional to its speed. One application of the invention is to machines wherein material is wound on a reel with a constant tension in the material as the diameter of the reel increases. The motors MS may be those driving other sections of such a machine at pre-set constant speed or speeds.
