Abstract
623,216. Rotary-transmission dynamometers. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd., OWNER, F. M., and MARCHANT, C. I. Nov. 27, 1946, No. 35238. [Class 106 (ii)] A dynamometer comprises an idler gear for transmitting the power to be indicated, means to support the idler for rotation, means for carrying this support for movement about an axis eccentric with the axis of rotation of the gear, and a torque indicator actuated by said support-carrying means due to the resultant of the tooth pressures on the idler. The invention is described as applied to a power plant in an aircraft in which a pair of gas turbine engines lie side-by-side, each transmitting to an output shaft 10 disposed between them, the shaft 10 being the input shaft of a reduction gearing which drives two counter-rotating airscrews. A pinion 17 on each turbine shaft 12 drives a gear 18 fast on the shaft 10 through an idler gear 19. Each idler gear is supported by a roller bearing upon a sleeve 21 having an eccentric bore to receive a pin 22 carried by a housing 9 (not shown). Each sleeve 21 has a radiallyextending arm 23, the free end of which is connected with a piston 25 by a rod 24. The piston 25 is in a cylinder 26 through which there circulates lubricating oil under pressure from a pump 27 driven by one or both turbines. A pressure gauge 30 in the pilot's cockpit is connected to pipe line from the pump 27 and is graduated to register torque units. The resultant force F produced by loads f<SP>1</SP> and ff<SP>2</SP> on the teeth of the idler gear 19 passes through the centre of the idler, and produces a moment about the centre of the pin 22 which tends to rotate the sleeve 21 upon the pin. This movement is transmitted to the arm 23 and hence to the oil in the cylinder 26, so that the variations in pressure in the oil indicate the torque transmitted through the idler gear 19. The oil in the cylinder 26 leaks past the piston 25 to within the housing 9 and is returned to the pump 27 to ensure any air entrapped in the oil is carried away and to reduce the tendency for the oil to freeze at high altitudes. The oilfilled cylinders 26 also act as hydraulic dampers for the transmission.
