Abstract

828,355. Rotary-transmission dynamometers. NAPIER & SON Ltd., D. Feb. 4, 1958 [March 15, 1957], No. 8711/57. Class 106 (2). Transmission gearing with means for measuring the torque transmitted comprises an intermediate idler gear 13, the axis of which is in line with the axes of the gears 12, 14 with which it meshes and is mounted for bodily movement perpendicularly to the plane containing these axes and an hydraulic piston and cylinder 32, one of which moves bodily with the idler 13, and pressure indicating means 36. As shown, the idler gear 13 is connected to two pistons 18, 19 moving in cylinders 32, 33, to which oil is supplied under pressure from a pump 24. Movement of the pistons 18, 19, covers or uncovers relief ports in the cylinders, thus allowing the pressure to build up in one and decrease in the other. The difference between the pressures is a measure of the torque transmitted and is read from a gauge 36.
