Abstract

Zirconium silicate is prepared by heating a mixture of zirconia with finely divided silica to a temperature at which the oxides combine, the silica being obtained either by oxidation of an organic material containing a silicon compound capable of yielding silica on oxidation, e.g. by combustion of an organic compound mixed with the vapour of a silicon compound, or by oxidizing an organic silicon compound or hydrolysing a hydrolysable silicon compound. Alternatively, a heat-hardenable zirconium compound, e.g. a partially hydrolysed zirconium ester, may be heated with silica. The product is used in the manufacture of refractories (see Group V). Specifications 575,734, [Group IV], and 621,742, [Group IV (a)], are referred to.ALSO:A refractory material comprising zirconium silicate is prepared by heating a mixture of zirconia with finely-divided silica to a temperature at which the oxides combine, the silica being obtained either by oxidation of an organic material containing a silicon compound capable of yielding silica on oxidation e.g. by combustion of an organic compound mixed with the vapour of a silicon compound, or by oxidising an organic silicon compound or hydrolysing a hydrolysable silicon compound. The silica may be employed in the form of a dispersion or a solution of a compound, or in the form of a heat hardenable organic silicon compound, and the ingredients may be in stoichiometric proportions to produce zircon. Where zirconia and a heat hardenable silicon compound are used as the ingredients they may be mixed with zircon as inert aggregate before heating. Alternatively, a heat-hardenable zirconium compound, e.g. a partially hydrolysed zirconium ester, may be heated with silica. Specifications 575,734, [Group IV], and 621,742, [Group IV (a)], are referred to.
