Abstract

Magnetic iron oxide, suitable for the production of magnetic recorders, is prepared by burning iron carbonyl while supplying only such an amount of oxygen that the resulting product has atomic ratio of oxygen to iron of less than 3:2. Combustion may take place at a burner nozzle at a temperature of 100 to 1500 DEG C, the temperature being varied by preheating the air used, or by adding oxygen or nitrogen, &c. thereto, or by employing oxygen alone, or by admixing other combustible gases or liquids, or by thermally insulating or cooling the combustion chamber. Other substances, e.g. silicon or tin tetrachlorides, or finely divided aluminium or silicon oxides, may be introduced with the air, or into the combustion chamber, or into the combustion products. Steam, &c. may also be added. The iron (ferrosoferric) oxide produced may be oxidized whilst still in suspension at temperatures below 500 DEG C, or even above this temperature if the products are cooled rapidly, by introducing further amounts of air or oxygen, to produce magnetic g -ferric oxide.
