Abstract
Tertiary carbinols of the general formula: <FORM:0621231/IV (b)/1> in which R, together with R2, represent a heterocyclic ring which includes the nitrogen atom, and R3 is alkyl, are prepared by the reaction in an inert solvent of a phenyl magnesium halide with an ester of the formula: <FORM:0621231/IV (b)/2> in which R is, e.g. an ethyl group. It is preferred to use a salt of the amino-ester, in which case a small amount in excess of three molecular proportions of phenyl magnesium halide is necessary. In the example: 3-(diphenyl-hydroxymethyl)-1-methyl piperidine is prepared via the hydrochloride from N-methyl-hexahydronicotinic acid ethyl ester hydrochloride in bezene and phenyl magnesium bromide in ether.
