Abstract
620,099. Claw clutches. BROWN & SONS (HUDDERSFIELD), Ltd., D., and TAYLOR, A. Jan. 4, 1947, No. 345. [Class 80 (ii)] A baulking ring c having a series of circumferential slots corresponding in number and substantially equal in length to the combined widths of the inter-engagable dogs a<1>, b<1> is provided between the axially movable and axially fixed clutch members a, b respectively in a change speed gear, the radial divisions c<2> between the slots extending towards the axially movable member a and being appropriately chamfered. In operation, when the speed of the member a exceeds that of the member b, the chamfered ends of the dogs a<1> frictionally engage the chamfered ends c<3> of the ring c to move it to the position shown in Fig. 2a. On reversal of relative speeds between the members a, b the ring c is moved to the opposite end of the slot in the member b and engagement' of the dogs a<1>, b<1> is permitted. The specification also describes the use of a double ended axially moving member with two baulking rings.
